EIGHTEEN people died during a heavy storm at the weekend in Luanda, a representative for the city said on Monday, while hundreds of homes in the city’s shantytowns were destroyed. Joao Dombaxi, representative for the city government, was unable to provide details on the deaths, but state media earlier reported that eight people died in a landslide and three others were electrocuted to death during the storm. The industrial town of Cacuaco, 20km from Luanda, was still cut off from the rest of the city after a bridge washed away in the storm on Saturday, Dombaxi said. At least 1_000 people lost their homes in Cacuaco, local administrator Agostinho Lima told the state-run Jornal de Angola.
