AIDS activists in Kenya on Thursday urged MPs to include “life-saving safeguards” when reviewing legislation concerning drug patents. Kenyan legislators are currently reviewing the Industrial Property Bill which, as it stands, conforms with World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules on countries’ rights to, in certain circumstances, overcome patent restrictions. Paralllel imports are re-purchased drugs from countries where they are cheaper than purchasing from the manufacturing country. Compulsory licences are those issued, under extreme circumstances, for the production or importation of cheaper generic versions of patented drugs. An estimated 2,5-million adults are living with HIV in Kenya, where about 500 people are thought to die of HIV related infections every day.
