AN Egyptian who had too much to drink in a nightclub on the banks of the Nile in Cairo, jumped into the river to dodge paying for his drinks, only to drown there, a police source said on Tuesday. Mohamed Massud, a 27-year-old taxi driver, had invited an electrician friend of the same age to a nightclub floating on the Nile in Giza south of Cairo, where they ordered several glasses of whisky, the police source added. As they did not have enough to pay the bill of 700 Egyptian pounds ($180), they decided to escape via the Nile, hoping to swim to the west bank, a few hundred metres away. Massud drowned en route and Abdel Salam reached the far bank only to be arrested by police who had been alerted by the employees of the nightclub.
