THE United Nations Security Council has commended the efforts of leaders in the volatile Great Lakes region to restore peace in war-wrecked Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). A high level 12-man delegation of the council currently touring Africa in a new resolve to end years of conflict in the region gave the approbation Thursday in Dar es Salaam after closed-door talks with Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa. The talks focused on the situation in the two countries, which form part of Africa’s hot conflicts. “But let me say candidly that there is no solution without goodwill. The solution is in the hands of the leaders of Burundi and the DRC,” team leader Jean-David Levitte, who is France’s ambassador to the UN, insisted during a press conference. Flanked by members of the team, Levitte, said the Security Council would support the endeavours, vowing, “to spare no effort” in the quest for peace in the region. He also hailed the efforts of retired South African President Nelson Mandela in seeking peace in Burundi.
