SOUTH African police are investigating the disappearance of a Mozambican International Metalworkers’ Federation official who a local union believes has been kidnapped, a spokeswoman said on Monday. Sergeant Amanda Roestoff said detectives were investigating the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Rui Benjamin Cossa. National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa spokesman Dumisa Ntuli said Cossa was co-ordinator for Africa’s metalworker unions. Officials of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) said Cossa disappeared in Johannesburg on May 24. His car was found abandoned in the city later the same day. Ntuli said the union and Cosatu believed Cossa was kidnapped, as it did not appear that he had been hijacked and no one has seen or heard of him since. – AFP
