SWAZI HEALTH CENTRES GET SHOT IN THE ARM

SWAZILANDS rural health centres got a shot in the arm on Tuesday when a team of US doctors and nurses promised to provide them with at least 1,000 computers. Dr Alex Bowier, the leader of a 36-member team, said the donation was to enable rural centres in the tiny kingdom to have up-to-date data on their patients and communicate with the nation’s hospitals. Swazi King Mswati III went to the United States at the end of May to meet with a team of US professionals to discuss HIV/Aids. The professionals, part of an organisation called Project Africa Enterprise, have been in the country for two weeks to assess HIV/Aids in Swaziland. Swaziland, with a population of about one million, has about 43,000 children orphaned by Aids and 200,000 adults infected with HIV. Mswati has also approached US artists such as Jay-Zee, Mariah Carey and Isaac Hayes to compose music for an album whose proceeds will go into a fund for Aids orphans. – AFP
