THIRTEEN members of the rebel Forces for the Defence of Democracy (FDD) were killed after infiltrating Burundi from neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), an army source said on Friday. The Hutu rebels had crossed the border and were on the outskirts of the town of Kabezi, just south of the capital Bujumbura, when they were “attacked by members of the Burundian army”, the source said. “Thirteen rebels were killed,” he added. Hutu rebels, who have been waging civil war against the Burundian government since 1993, frequently try to enter Burundi from the DRC by crossing Lake Tanganyika, which has a shoreline stretching some 150 kilometres. The lake forms a natural border between the two central African neighbours. – AFP
