UN TO HELP VACCINATE 12 MILLION DRC CHILDREN

UNITED Nations troops and military observers will help vaccinate some 12 million children against polio in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) at the beginning of July, the DRC government and the UN announced Wednesday. “Certain children have found themselves in troubled areas,” mostly in the eastern half of the former Zaire which is under the control of rebels and their Rwandan and Ugandan allies, said DRC Health Minister Mashako Mamba. “They can only be reached with the help of MONUC (the UN mission in the country),” Mamba told the MONUC head in Kinshasa during a launch here of the programme, known as “national vaccination days 2001.”
