BLACK MARIA?S HANDED OVER TO NIGERIAN PRISONS

THE Nigerian police have handed over more than 80 Black Maria vans to the prison service in an effort to end delays in the trial system, police said on Wednesday. For years, the judiciary has complained of the failure of the police to bring trial suspects to court for hearings. The prison service says it does not itself have enough vehicles to bring the suspects to court and as a result trials are frequently delayed because of non-appearances in court. The release of the vehicles, 48 serviceable and 33 unserviceable, followed a directive by President Olusegun Obasanjo, the police said. – AFP
