LAGOS MOB LYNCHES SUSPECTED ROBBERS

NIGERIAN police on Tuesday shot dead a suspected armed robber, and a mob set ablaze and killed five of his colleagues after they failed in their attempt to rob a bank, Lagos police boss said. The six were a part of a 14-man gang which had attempted to rob a bank at noon in central Lagos, Mike Okiro told journalists. One of the group was arrested. State-run NTA television showed footage of the six dead men as well as the only one who was caught alive. Armed robbery has been on the increase in the past few months and the introduction of soldiers into crime fighting has not brought any noticeable change in the situation. Lagos, with an estimated population of over 12 million, is Nigeria’s biggest city and main commercial centre. – AFP
