MOZAMBIQUE plans to build a major dam in the southern Maputo province to control flood waters, the government announced this week. The dam in Moamba district, in Maputo province, 70km west of Maputo, is expected to cost $360-million, the ministry of public works and housing said in a statement. The African Development Bank will fund the project. Last year, the southern provinces of Maputo and Gaza were hit by the worst floods in Mozambican history. More than 700 people were killed in the floods, which left a trail of destruction costing the impoverished southern African country about $600-million. – AFP
