FOUR-YEAR-OLD DETAINED BY NIGERIAN COPS

POLICE held a four-year-old boy in a Lagos police cell for three days after he allegedly threw stones at a neighbour’s car, the state attorney-general said on Friday. Lagos state Attorney-General Fola Arthur-Worrey said that the boy, Sunday Konchi, was arrested last Saturday and held until Monday when the Lagos State Justice Ministry ordered his release. ”He was being held as a kind of hostage,” Arthur-Worrey said. Sunday and another boy, identified only as Chigozie, were accused of throwing stones at the windscreen of a neighbour’s car. Chigozie was released after a few hours when he became ill, officials said. Police said on Friday they were investigating the matter. ”In this case the very idea of thinking they had some competence to detain a four-year-old shows a real misunderstanding of the law,” Arthur-Worrey said. – Reuters
