S LEONE REBELS SHAKEN BY OFFICIAL?S DEATH

THE death of the secretary-general of Sierra Leone’s rebel Revolutionary United Front (RUF), Solomon Rogers, in jail has been received “badly” by members, the chairman of the RUF’s peace council Omrie Golley said on Monday. “His death was received by all in the RUF pretty badly. At this point in time there are a lot of emotional statements being expressed from various quarters within the movement,” he said. Golley, however, underlined that the RUF would not disrupt an ongoing peace process following a May disarmament pact and an unprecedented agreement to stop mining the so-called “conflict diamonds” in the eastern Kono region. Rogers, who had been detained since May last year, died of hypertension and malaria, prison sources said. – AFP
