ZIMBABWE DELAYS COMMONWEALTH MEETING

Commonwealth talks hosted by Nigeria, aimed at pulling Zimbabwe out of international isolation over its violence-wracked land reforms, have been delayed to the first week of September, Zimbabwean state television said on Friday. Nigerian and Zimbabwean officials had announced that the Commonwealth group would be meeting in Nigeria August 15-17 to seek ways to heal strained relations between Zimbabwe and Britain over the land issue. But Zimbabwean state television reported that Nigeria’s and Zimbabwe’s foreign ministries had delayed the meeting to the first week of September. No reason was given for the delay. The meeting would be the first of the group of seven — Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Australia, Jamaica, Britain and Zimbabwe itself. The Commonwealth ministerial group was created in June, after Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe’s government flatly rejected a similar fact-finding mission proposed in March. – AFP
