Imperial Ghetto is a photographic diary of people and events encountered by photographer Omar Badsha in Durban’s Grey Street vicinity in the apartheid era.
The title of Badsha’s exhibition, Imperial Ghetto, is an ironic play on the fact that the labyrinth of streets was named after leading members of the Victorian imperial establishment.
The photographs, taken between 1978 and 1986, cover the period when hundreds of families, who had lived in the area since the early part of the 20th century, were forced to move.
The collection is being shown at the Durban Art Gallery until September 20. To coincide with the exhibition, Badsha has published the book Imperial Ghetto: Ways of Seeing in a South African City.
