RIGHTS GROUPS OPPOSE CHOICE OF ‘TORTURER’

TUNISIAN human rights activist and torture victim Said Ferjani on Saturday condemned the appointment of General Habib Ammar as head of the committee organising the Mediterranean Games as “an insult to all victims of his torture.” “It is an insult to all honest people, to all victims, that a torturer could head such an organization,” said Ferjani. Ferjani says he was “tortured continually” after his arrest in 1987, when he was accused by General Ben Ali of planning a coup. Ben Ali came to power in Tunisia after a coup in 1987. “While I was tortured in the offices of the Interior Ministry, Habib Ammar was the Minister of the Interior.” Ammar’s appointment has stirred intense international protest. The World Organisation Against Torture said Friday that “during the time he was minister, the offices of the ministry were transformed into a centre of detention and torture.” – AFP
