‘TEARGAS CAUSED ELLIS PARK PANIC’

TEARGAS fired into the crowd in the north-eastern stand of Ellis Park on the night of the soccer stampede in April had caused the crowd to panic, an Orlando Pirates supporter said on Tuesday.

Johannes Mofokeng was testifying at the commission of inquiry into the April 11 stampede at a Premier League Soccer match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates which left 43 people dead and hundreds injured.

”When teargas is thrown people become confused and they run,” he said.

On Monday the head of Pirates’ security, Fanie Molapo, told the commission that security guards dressed in black had teargas canisters with them. He could not identify the company they worked for. – Sapa
