A 30-year-old man was arrested in Soweto on Friday night on suspicion of murdering Labour Ministry representative Eddie Jayiya, Johannesburg police said on Saturday. The man is currently being questioned by police, Superintendent Norman Ponnusamy said. He is expected to appear in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Monday. The motive for the killing was still not known. Jayiya was in his car waiting for his girlfriend in Meadowlands, Soweto around 9pm on Thursday when he was shot three times. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Tshepo Themba Hospital in Dobsonville, Soweto. Jayiya became representative for Minister Membathisi Mdladlana three months ago, after working as a journalist for The Star newspaper. The Congress of South African trade Unions said Jayiya’s murder had sent shock waves through their ranks. ”The death of the Eddie Jayiya has devastated all Cosatu’s members,” the union said. – Sapa
