A MEMBER of the Naboomspruit Commando will appear in court again on October 5 after he allegedly shot and killed a farm labourer last week, said Northern Province police. Captain Blackie Swart said Pieter Swanepoel appeared in court on Monday on a charge of murder. This followed an incident last week Thursday when a farm labourer, William Laka, was arrested on a farm in the district for allegedly assaulting the manager. Laka was later released on his own cognisance and warned to appear in court on Friday. Laka returned to the farm and the farm manager, who was unhappy that Laka had been released, called the local commando. When the commando, which included Swanepoel, confronted Laka at his house on the farm, Laka allegedly attacked Swanepoel and stabbed him in the forehead. Swanepoel fired a shot, hitting Laka in the hip. He was taken to the Mokopane hospital where he died early on Saturday morning, Swart said. Swanepoel was arrested shortly afterwards. He was granted R1 000 bail on Monday. – Sapa
