Mail &Guardian reporter

Telkom has co- engineered the SAP/ Commerce One Platform, unique in South Africa and one of just six in the world. The system allows com- panies to set up and run online trading.

Telkom is a Cisco Gold Partner and has also achieved the Cisco powered network status for virtual private data networks (VPDN), virtual private networks over Internet protocol (VPN/IP), VPNs over frame relay and integrated data, voice- and fax-over IP services.

The company has a close working relationship with Sun Micro-systems, supplier of hosting and data technologies and is SunTone certified.

Dell and Compaq are both manufacturers of desktop hardware. Telkom is able to partner with both in servicing the LAN environment.

Telkom employs one of the largest groups of Microsoft-certified engineers and technicians in South Africa and the collaboration between the two companies gives the company’s customer a competitive advantage in the e-market.

Other strategic alliances it has entered include: * 3Com in the LAN; telephony market; * Siemens in the PBX market; * Cisco in the customer care network arena; * Hughes Network Systems to provide satellite-based communications solutions;

* Telkom has also allied itself with Concert Global Networks, Equant and Infonet Services Corporation.

It is through these partners that Telkom is able to offer globally managed data networks such as Frame Relay and remote LAN access.
