SOUTH Africa’s National Muslim Coalition has condemned, “in the strongest possible terms”, the US attack on Afghanistan, in a statement released on Monday afternoon. The coalition, which represents 35 Muslim organisations, says that it does not believe the evidence against Bin Laden is sufficiently strong to warrant the attacks. It points out that the danger of loss of civilian life is considerable, noting that “focused bombing” by Allied forces in the course of the 1991 Gulf War killed 200_000 Iraqis, many of them civilians. “We call on all South Africans including our government to protest against this attack on a country that was almost completely devastated by one superpower and is now being ravaged by another,” it continues. – DM&G
