4 KILLED, 2 ARRESTED IN WELKOM HEIST

FOUR men were killed while trying to rob a security vehicle transporting cash near the Welkom airport on Wednesday afternoon. Captain Pauline Earle said the first robber deliberately crashed his vehicle into the security vehicle and was killed instantly. Another car driven by one of the robbers then crashed into the first escort vehicle in front of the minibus. A bakkie then pulled off the road and two robbers began firing AK47 assault rifles at the second escort vehicle. The security guards returned fire, killing two of their assailants. Another man was killed in the crossfire. Several accomplices from the three cars then fled into the bush and the police closed all the roads out of Welkom. Two robbers were later arrested and two AK47 assault rifles and an Uzi sub-machine gun was confiscated. Three security guards were injured in the shooting and have been admitted to hospital. – Sapa
