CHISSANO CALLS FOR WAR ON POVERTY

MOZAMBIQUE President Joaquim Chissano said on Tuesday that the current war on terrorism, declared in the wake of terror strikes last month against the United States, should be extended to become a war on poverty. Chissano, who is on an official visit to Cuba, called poverty a “pressing need of humanity,” but underlined that current concerns tend to focus on other areas of conflict, such as on the US-led war on Afghanistan, and the Middle East conflict. The Mozambican leader, who arrived on Sunday in Havana and met on Monday with President Fidel Castro, warned of the need to identify the cause of conflicts and do away with them “gradually” so as to be able to tackle other dramas, such as “hunger, equality (between nations).” The African leader is seeking to boost and consolidate bilateral ties with Cuba. On Tuesday, the last day of the official part of his visit, Chissano was due to visit the International School of Physical Education and Sports, the Latin American School of Medicine, as well as make a tour of Havana’s historical district. – AFP
