Athletics, canoeing, cycling, rowing and swimming have been identified as the sports in which South Africa is most likely to perform well at the Athens Olympics in 2004.

Speaking at the National Olympic Committee of South Africa’s annual banquet in Midrand this week, president Sam Ramsamy said Nocsa would harmonise sport and bring about national pride and unity under the umbrella of the world’s number one sports brand, the Olympics. “We are redirecting Nocsa to 2004 on the basis of a business not just as a macro sports administrative body,” he said.

There is now an Olympic Foundation headed by John Newbury, Bertie Lubner, Khaya Ngqula, Anant Singh and Reuel Khoza. The foundation aims to raise R140-million in the three years leading up to Athens.

The money will be used largely for Operation Excellence and already substantial funds have been forwarded to federations for preparation.
