TRC TO BE DISSOLVED IN MARCH 2002

THE Truth and Reconciliation Commission will dissolve at the end of March next year, chief executive Martin Coetzee said on Wednesday. He said the head office in Cape Town would complete its work late in December, but a few staffers would remain to finalise the report. President Thabo Mbeki earlier this month issued a proclamation to dissolve the commission at the end of May next year, to give researchers time to finish the report. Coetzee said about 15 staffers would continue working on the findings and recommendations for final approval by the commission. The commission was appointed in 1995 to establish the causes, nature and extent of gross human rights abuses committed during apartheid. – Sapa
