Former president Nelson Mandela on Sunday appealed to the Gauteng African National Congress to keep up with changes after provincial supporters failed to sing the entire national anthem. He made the statement after about 500 people were asked to welcome him onto the podium by singing the national anthem. However, the crowd sang the Zulu and Sotho part of the anthem. ”I would like to appeal to the ANC in Gauteng to keep up with change. What was sang was not our national anthem,” he said. Mandela said South Africa has a carefully composed anthem, and it was a pity that a prosperous province like Gauteng could not comply and sing the modern anthem. He made the comment before reading his prepared speech at the 40th commemoration of Umkhonto we Sizwe at the Jabulani Amphitheatre in Soweto, Johannesburg, on Sunday. – Sapa
