The Independent Newspaper group, owners of the Cape Times, are to appeal a Cape High Court judgment that awarded a Muslim man R100 000 damages for defamation.
Walied Suleiman brought a defamation action before Judge Selwyn Selikowitz following the appearance of his photograph on the front page of the Cape Times incorrectly linking him to the Waterfront
bombing of the Planet Hollywood restaurant in August 1998.
Suleiman’s attorney Abe Khan said on Monday that
Independent Newspapers had notified their intention to appeal the judgement.
He said a date still had to be arranged for Independent Newspapers to launch an application before Selikowitz for leave to appeal.
Khan estimated that the costs for which Independent Newspapers are so far liable, amount to R500 000. – Sapa
