South African adventurer Mike Horn will start the frigid fourth leg of his one-man Arctic Circle tour on Wednesday, according to a statement released on Tuesday.
Horn, who left Norway on August 4, will now cross Canada’s Northwest Territories on foot and skis. At the start of the leg locals warned Horn about the dangers of a Canadian winter.
”Dealing with polar bears will be a bit like dodging icebergs and growlers. The bears move along the fringes of the land, taking their food from the water. I’ll have to stay clear of these areas
as much as I can.
”I’ll camp on higher ground, away from the water at night. Ill also have to set up my bear watch system and must be extra careful with storing my food, and when cooking,” Horn said.
Horn (35) expects to complete the 17-stage, 20 000 kilometre tour, dubbed Arktos in 18 months. His next stage is Alaska.
Horn, a lifelong extreme adventurer, also walked, biked and sailed the equator solo in 1999-2000.
”The drive to go beyond our physical, mental and spiritual limits is an internal attitude that transcends global borders. It tests our personal limits and opens the way for new levels of achievement in all aspects of life,” he said. – Sapa-AFP
