MEC calls for proposals on Cape film studio

Western Cape Finance MEC Ebrahim Rasool called on Monday for proposals to establish a government-backed film studio in Cape Town.

Addressing the media at the Artscape Theatre, Rasool asked for proposals from the public on establishing a studio and post-production facility for the province.

Representative Thabo Mabaso said the MEC was responding to calls from film and advert-makers for such a facility, currently lacking in the city. Some have called for the provincial government to finance the studio.

Cape Town has become a sought-after location for film and advert makers but these generally flew in and flew out without contributing much by way of sustainable job creation to the Western Cape economy.

Mabaso said Rasool wanted those in favour of a film studio to brief him by December 12 on possible venues, what such a studio would offer, how many jobs it could create, as well as the extent to which it would empower black and women filmmakers. – Sapa
