Two oxen being loaded for export at East London’s harbour on Monday night gave officials the run around when they escaped.
The oxen were being loaded as part of a lot of 400 being shipped to Mauritius.
The drama began round about 7pm when an irate ox pushed another into the water and made a dash into the harbour, and then out of the harbour.
Loading manger Charles Pope said the police were immediately called in.
”We were just about to get finished and we couldn’t do anything about (the escaping ox) as it shot past us very quickly after it ran off through a gap,” said Pope.
Meanwhile the other ox swam about 100 metres into the nearby rocks where it was recaptured.
By late last night, the second ox was still missing. – Sapa
