The Mozambique government plans to scout inside Europe for investors in a giant hydro-electrical dam it wants to build, a cabinet minister said Thursday.
”We are leaving at the weekend for a 10-day trip to Europe for contacts with potential investors,” said Energy Minister Castigo Langa.
He said a delegation will visit Belgium, France, Germany and Britain. The 1,3-billion dollar Mepanda N’cua dam is to be built south of Cahora Bassa dam on the Zambezi River, in Central Mozambique.
According to the government’s hydroelectrical project implementation unit, the new dam will generate 2 400 megawatts of power and will be able to meet the region’s growing power needs.
The government expects construction to begin in 2005, and power to be generated by 2010.
The new dam will also help to reduce the impact of floods along the Zambezi valley. Mozambique suffered from severe floods in 2000 and 2001. – Sapa
