MPs to nominate new public protector by June 21

PARLIAMENT will establish a 27-member ad hoc committee to nominate a new public protector to succeed Selby Baqwa, whose term of office ends in October.

Baqwa was appointed the country’s first public protector for a non-renewable seven-year term.

In terms of the Constitution, the president must appoint the public protector on the recommendation of the National Assembly.

The Constitution provides that the public protector must a be a man or woman who is a South African citizen and a ”fit and proper” person.

The committee will consist of 14 ANC MPs, 2 DA MPs and all the other parties represented in Parliament will have one MP each, accordings to Tuesday’s order paper.

It has to report to the National Assembly by June 21, this year. – Sapa
