Murderers slit their throats in the dock

Two prisoners convicted of murder and robbery cut their throats with razor blades in the Johannesburg High Court on Friday, shortly before their 2pm sentencing.

Billy Monareng and Motselefa Moagi were part of a group convicted of murdering and robbing elderly people in a trial that went on for many weeks.

The group was charged with six robberies and 10 murders which took place in the Florida and Roodepoort areas.

The court was adjourning for a break when the two men began slicing at their throats with razor blades.

Esther Monareng, who had been seated behind her husband, grabbed him and tried to prevent him from killing himself. She was splattered with his blood as her husband shouted: ”It is better to die today”.

Court orderlies grabbed him and Moagi and they were

taken to the cells after being overpowered. Emergencey Services were called in and both were taken to hospital. – Sapa
