The Department of Justice’s elite detective unit, the Scorpions, on Wednesday announced it was investigating allegations of fraud and corruption at the SA Broadcasting Corporation’s Auckland Park headquarters.
”The preliminary investigation is to determine whether there’s any substance in the allegations,” the Scorpions said in a statement.
Representative Sipho Ngwema said a full-scale investigation would be conducted if warranted.
”Although names of top executives have been mentioned, it is too early at this stage to give any specific detail on the nature of the allegations and the persons that we have, or still have, to interview.”
On Wednesday night, the SABC confirmed that the Scorpions were assisting it with investigations into corruption at the corporation.
Peter Matlare, the broadcaster’s CEO, said the SABC had approached the Scorpions for assistance as the SABC needed to get further evidence.
Matlare said no top executive was being investigated at present.
The Star reports that at the centre of the probe is the corporation’s R900-million commissioning budget. – Sapa
