Security guard shoots three women in Johannesburg

A 29-year security guard was arrested on Saturday after he allegedly went on a shooting spree in Honeydew, Johannesburg wounding three women, police said.

A group of about eight people had congregated next to Beyers Naude drive on Saturday evening and were drinking together when a fight broke out, Captain Paula Nothnagel said.

One of the men ran off to call his brother to help him in the fight.

Nothnagel said according to eyewitnesses, on arriving at the scene, the man’s brother pulled out a firearm and allegedly fired randomly into the group of people, wounding three women.

Unus Dhiko (42) was wounded in the left upper arm and chest. Her daughter Leanne Dhiko (22) was shot in the stomach and chest while another woman Nomsa Madoena

(29) was shot twice in the stomach.

Unus Dhiko was taken to the Johannesburg general hospital while the other two women were taken to the Helen Joseph hospital.

All three women were in a critical condition.

Nothnagel said the security guard, who works at a construction site just off the N1 highway, was arrested soon after the incident occurred and a 9mm licensed firearm was confiscated from his possession.

Six 9mm shell were recovered from the scene.

Nothnagel said the man, who was positively identified by two witnesses, will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on three charges of attempted murder. – Sapa
