National police commissioner Jackie Selebi has ordered a probe of what are reported to be allegations of victimisation levelled against his Western Cape counterpart Lennit Max.
This was confirmed on Wednesday by Selebi’s representative, Superintendent Sally de Beer.
She said Selebi had received a copy of a letter written by the police provincial director of legal services, Johann Nortje, in which ”certain allegations were made”.
”The national commissioner said he will definitely have the matter looked into at national level,” she said.
The Cape Times reported on Wednesday that the victimisation claims came from two senior female police officers, one of who had since resigned and had received psychological counselling.
The other woman, it said, was one of Max’s three deputies, Zelda Holtzman.
The claims follow a spat earlier this year between Max and Holtzman which led to all four of the top Western Cape staff being summoned in April to Selebi’s office.
De Beer said on Wednesday that that meeting had resulted in a written agreement stipulating that there would be regular written reports to Selebi.
The victimisation claims had not been mentioned in any of them, she said.
Bukeka Dekeda-Dlilanga, representative for Western Cape community safety MEC Leonard Ramatlakane, confirmed that he had copies of the Nortje letter and a statement from Holtzman.
He viewed the allegations as serious, but would not comment until the national commissioner had released findings. – Sapa
