Shoprite expands to Mauritius

South African food and furniture retailer Shoprite Holdings said on Thursday it had opened a hypermarket store in the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, boosting its presence on the African continent.

Shoprite said the 8 000 square metre store in Trianon was the largest on the island.

The group, which owns Shoprite, Checkers and Hyperama outlets, has expanded aggressively and has operations spanning a dozen countries on the African continent.

”What sets Shoprite apart from other food retailers in Mauritius is the fact that we can offer consumers lower prices due to our well-established distribution system throughout the African continent and the group’s buying power,” said Shoprite.

The group said in a statement it was looking for other opportunities to expand on the Indian Ocean island.

Its shares ended up 2,8% at 699 cents on Wednesday, outperforming a 0,4% gain in the broader market. – Reuters
