DEPUTY PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma said plans were in place to help government hospitals distribute the antiretroviral drug nevirapine, SABC Radio news reported on Saturday.
Zuma, speaking after a meeting with the South African National Aids Council (Sanac) in Pretoria, said government strategy to fight the pandemic was yielding positive results.
Zuma told Sanac members that awareness programmes had reached over 90% of the population and that the spread of HIV/Aids was stabilising.
Last month the government adopted a five-year policy to fight HIV/Aids and increased the budget to R1-billion for the current financial year.
Sanac is scheduled to hold a workshop next month which will chart the way forward in the fight against HIV/Aids. – Sapa
