Teen mom, fiance in court after battered baby dies

An 18-year-old woman and her 23-year-old fiance appeared in the Hopetown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday in connection with the death earlier in the day of their seven-month-old baby girl, police

said.

The baby died in the Kimberley hospital on Wednesday morning after she had been admitted in a coma and with severe injuries including fractured arms, bite marks and cigarette burns on Monday.

The couple were arrested on Tuesday after the mother took the injured baby to the Hopetown municipal clinic on Monday complaining that the baby was ”drowsy and stiff”.

The by then partially brain dead baby was later transferred to Kimberley hospital, police representative Inspector Tony Modise said.

The couple, who live and work on a farm outside Hopetown, were remanded in custody until December 17 after their brief appearance. – Sapa
