Three injured as horses stray onto highway

Three people were seriously injured when two cars collided with two horses on both sides of the R21 freeway in Kempton Park on Wednesday morning, traffic officials said. Supervisor Carel Mouton said the accidents occurred around 6am near the Engen One Stop Garage.

A group of horses were on the road when a car collided with one. The second animal bolted across the highway and was hit by another car.

It was not immediately clear why the horses were on the freeway.

Two people were seriously injured in the accident that happened in the direction of Pretoria and one person was seriously injured while travelling to Johannesburg.

Mouton said only the emergency lane was open on the carriageway to Pretoria as the horse’s remains had been spread across the road. The horse involved in the accident that happened in Johannesburg’s direction was lying dead next to the road.

”The traffic is moving very slowly,” Mouton said.

He said another two horses were still roaming the freeway and cautioned motorists to either use an alternative route or drive with extreme care.

It was not known who the horses belonged to. – Sapa
