POLICE in northern KwaZulu-Natal arrested two people, including an induna, and confiscated rifles and ammunition during an operation at Nqutu over the weekend, spokesman Inspector Sabelo Zwane said on Monday.
Zwane said Sunday’s operation in Hlakazi followed a recent upsurge of violence between the Mabasa and Magubane clans.
The induna, a leader of the Mabasa clan, was allegedly found in the possession of an AK47 assault rifle which was believed to have been used in the ongoing faction fighting.
The feuding dates back to the early 1980s. In the latest incident, on New Year’s Eve a father and his teenage son were killed.
Zwane said that during Sunday’s blitz police confiscated two AK47 rifles along with two magazines and 22 rounds of ammunition. Police also seized two 9mm pistols, with 20 rounds of ammunition and 13 empty magazines, two G3 rifles, 12 303 rounds, 24 R5 rounds, a .38 special revolver and 77 rounds of ammunition as well as an air rifle.
A number of police camouflage uniforms and bullet proof vests were recovered, Zwane said.
Meanwhile, police arrested two men on Sunday in connection with a shooting at a wedding in KwaNongoma last year.
Zwane said the incident was also believed to be related to faction fighting in the area.
A man was killed and four others were seriously injured during the attack in May.
Zwane said one of those arrested would also be charged with armed robbery. – Sapa
