NIGERIAN COPS CONFIRM DEATH OF JUDGE’S AIDE

THE Nigerian police late on Tuesday said they were investigating the death of a man identified as a senior aide to the country’s top judge, but were still to determine whether he had been murdered. The Abuja police command confirmed that the man, identified as SA Awonusi, the secretary to Chief Justice Muhammadu Uwais, head of the country’s Supreme Court, had been found dead early on Monday. But they withdrew an earlier statement that he had been stabbed in the back and suggested that, unlike in earlier police accounts, he had flown to Abuja on Sunday, instead of Monday. The police command said that Awonusi’s corpse “was sighted lying in the central area near to the Central Mosque, Abuja” at around 10:00 am (0900 GMT) Monday. – AFP
