RARE RAINS CLAIM 17 LIVES IN EGYPT

SEVENTEEN people were killed and 70 others hurt on Saturday in road accidents linked to the heaviest rains and coldest weather Egypt has experienced in six years. Several streets in Cairo were flooded because of a lack of storm drains, provoking traffic jams. Light rains usually hit Egypt two or three times a year, in contrast to the heavy downpours that have occurred for much of last week. Meanwhile, a fishing boat overturned on Friday in high seas in the Gulf of Suez, police sources said. Forty-two fishermen were either dead or missing, the government daily Al-Akhbar reported on Sunday. – Sapa-AFP
