BETWEEN six and eight men robbed a Fidelity Guard vehicle of 10 cash boxes in Kwa-Thema near Springs on the East Rand on Tuesday morning, Gauteng police said. Superintendent Andy Pieke said the cash heist occurred at Extension 2 around noon. A BMW crashed into the Fidelity Guard vehicle and was blocked by a Ford Bantam bakkie. The driver of the vehicle lost control and it overturned, crashing into a Mazda 323. The gang of robbers then forced the transit vehicle open with an axe and a crow bar. They made of with the money in a Passat, BMW and Mercedes Benz. The three vehicles were later found abandoned at a nearby cemetery. An empty cash box and a firearm robbed from one of the guards were also recovered. The police also established that the three cars had been stolen in Sandton, Mondeor and Springs. Nobody was injured and no arrests had been made. – Sapa
