DRC PEACE TALKS SET FOR MID-FEBRUARY

THE meeting between the warring parties in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to plan for a full Inter-Congolese National Dialogue will now be held in mid-February, the office of the chief facilitator Sir Ketumile Masire said in Gaborone on Monday. ”The talks have been delayed because of a combination of factors,” said Bo Heineback, a Swedish diplomat seconded to Masire’s staff. The factors were money, and a review of the participation of political and religious groups and the armed opposition RCD (French abbreviation for the Congolese Rally for Democracy). ”There have been more pledges and we are now sure we will have enough money to fund the meeting,” Heineback said. ”Money is on its way, but we have to be sure and see it in our account. We must be secure.” The meeting, which was initially to have been held at the end of January, will be hosted in South Africa. – Sapa
