PROBE IN MINERS DEATH AT DRIEFONTEIN

AN investigation into the death of five miners at the Driefontein Gold Mine west of Johannesburg would start on Wednesday. Gold Fields representative Willie Jacobsz said the investigation would be conducted by the company and mine inspectors from the Minerals and Energy Department. Five miners were killed on Tuesday when two earth tremors struck about 3 000 metres underground just after 8am on a level where a new tunnel was being dug. The names of the miners would only be released once their next-of-kin had been informed. Jacobsz said all the bodies were brought to the ground by Tuesday night. The first body was found in the morning. The second body was found around 4pm and the last three about an hour and a half later. The end of the tunnel collapsed when the tremors, measuring one on the Richter scale, hit the area. – Sapa
