WARFARE IN WESTBURY LEAVES PUPIL DEAD

TWO young men were arrested in Westbury, Johannesburg on Monday after they had allegedly accidentally shot and killed a 13-year-old high school pupil, police said. Superintendent Lungelo Dlamini said the two, aged 19 and 20, were arrested only hours after the incident in Robert Avenue. One of the suspected gunmen was taken to the Sophiatown police station by members of the community. Dlamini said two occupants of a red Uno confronted three men who were walking in the street and opened fire around 3pm. The 13-year-old boy was hit by the stray bullet while he was crossing a park on Robert Avenue. The victim was hit in the head and died at the scene. His twin brother escaped unscathed as did the three men who were the presumed target of the attack. The men in the Uno sped off before the police arrived. Dlamini said eyewitnesses told the police that the gunmen lived in the area and it was believed that the two groups were from opposing gangs. It was, however, not clear to which gangs they belonged. The suspects are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court soon. – Sapa
