Big test for SA boxers

BOXING

Deon Potgieter

Three South African boxers are featured in world-title action on Saturday and all three face a testing time.

Jan Bergman makes the first defence of the World Boxing Union (WBU) welterweight world title he won in June against Colombian Guilermo Mosquero. Although Bergman still possesses one of the most awesome left hooks in the business, he is not as confident in the ring as would be expected. This cautious approach was caused by the beating he took at the hands of Zab Judah when challenging for the International Boxing Federation version of the title two years ago.

Hawk Makepula will be attempting to win his third world title in the main supporting bout on the Bergman-Roche undercard. Makepula faces the undefeated Russian Dimitri Kirilov for the vacant International Boxing Organisation (IBO) flyweight crown.

On a separate bill, but also in England, Martin Jacobs makes his first attempt at winning a world title when he takes on Colin Dunne for the WBU lightweight crown.
