East London | Monday
A PROVINCIAL minister in the Eastern Cape was arrested and charged with drunken driving on the weekend, South African police said on Sunday.
Superintendent Eddie Watson said the minister, who will not be named until he has appeared in court on Monday, was arrested driving a luxury car soon after midnight on Saturday in the town of East London, on the east coast.
Another man allegedly arrived at the police station later and tried to bribe the arresting officer into taking his blood instead of the politician’s.
Watson said police would investigate this claim.
The provincial minister was released on bail set at R500 ($43) and will appear in the local magistrate’s court on Monday charged with drunken driving. – Sapa
