A SOUTH African soldier was shot dead by a countryman and two others were wounded in Burundi on Wednesday night, the SA National Defence Force announced on Thursday. It said the incident happened at the Sandf base in Bujumbura after an argument between two members of the South African contingent doing duty in the Burundian capital. ”One of the members, a corporal, allegedly fired at and seriously wounded an officer,” said Sandf representative Major-General Chris Pepani. ”A third member, who tried to intervene, was also allegedly fired at and wounded by the corporal. He managed to return fire, allegedly killing the corporal.” The South African contingent in Bujumbura was deployed late last year to protect exiled Burundian leaders returning home to take part in that country’s transitional government. – Sapa
